Notes : An extract of this text was published in The Pearl in December 1880 under the title The Sultan's Reverie which suggests that it was written before 1880 or at the latest within that year. Peter Mendes evaluate the publishing date at 1886. About the publication, he writes: "It is more likely that Lazenby offered this 'extract' [to The Pearl] as a flyer to whet the appetite of his clientele. The original MS probably came into his possession on [James Campbell] Reddie's death, and was probably written by one (or more) of the flagellant circle centred around Richard Monckton-Milnes (Edward Bellamy, General Studholme Hodgson, Swinburne, et al.)." note 19-A.
